by David Allen Sibley
Book Description
The man who revolutionized the field guide to birds now brings his formidable skills of identification and illustration to the more than six hundred tree species of North America. Similar in size and format to The Sibley Guide to Birds, the layout for this guide is another triumph of logic and concision. Species are arranged taxonomically, not by features such as leaf shape (as in most other guides), which will enable the user to browse the images to find a match for an observed tree in the same way a birder uses the bird guide. And all pages will follow the same format, allowing the user to pinpoint particular information with ease. David Sibleyโ€s meticulous, exquisitely detailed paintings illustrate the cycles of annual and lifetime development, and reveal even the very subtle similarities and distinctions between like elements of different species: bark, leaves, needles, cones, flowers, fruit, twigs, and silhouettes. More than four hundred ...
The Omnivore's Dilemma:
A Natural History of Four Meals
by Michael Pollan
A national bestseller that has changed the way readers view the ecology of eating, this revolutionary book by award winner Michael Pollan asks the seemingly simple question: What should we have for dinner? Tracing from source to table each of the food chains that sustain usโ€” whether industrial or organic, alternative or processedโ€”he develops a portrait of the American way of eating. The result is a sweeping, surprising exploration of the hungers that have shaped our evolution, and of the profound implications our food choices have for the health of our species and the future of our planet.
by Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian. But on the brink of fatherhood-facing the prospect of having to make dietary choices on a child's behalf-his casual questioning took on an urgency His quest for answers ultimately required him to visit factory farms in the middle of the night, dissect the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong. Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir and his own detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits-from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth-and how such tales can lull us into a brutal forgetting. Marked by Foer's profound moral ferocity and unvarying generosity, as well as the vibrant style and creativity that made his previous books, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredi...

The National Parks:
America's Best Idea
by Dayton Duncan
The companion volume to the twelve-hour PBS series from the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Civil War, Baseball, and The War
Americaโ€s national parks spring from an idea as radical as the Declaration of Independence: that the nationโ€s most magnificent and sacred places should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. In this evocative and lavishly illustrated narrative, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan delve into the history of the park idea, from the first sighting by white men in 1851 of the valley that would become Yosemite and the creation of the worldโ€s first national park at Yellowstone in 1872, through the most recent additions to a system that now encompasses nearly four hundred sites and 84 million acres.
The authors recount the adventures, mythmaking, and intense political battles behind the evolution of the park system, and the enduring ideals that fostered its growth. They capture the importance and splend...
Make it an addition to your medical library
Auseful tool to find normal values and aceptable levels of every element of body fluids. Abrief desciption of each test is followed by lists of medical conditions that may influence the result. The design of professional considerations add more value to this book, since abnormal results not necessarily reflect abnormal medical conditions, they may as well come from various mistakes when preparing or handling the test, or influenced by the patient's previous medications. The text is well organized with plain English. A very useful book that I'd like to recommend it to every medical student.
The best lab text ever!
I've taught nursing for the past 22 years and this is by far the best lab book I've ever used. At first glance it may appear intimidating, but it is very user friendly. The first few pages are medical diagnoses and their common labs with the most critical few astericked. The majority of the text is alphabetized by lab name and includes not only the values, but panic values, highlighted boxes for signs and symptoms of toxicities and treatments for each, and an extensive list of causes for high and low levels. There is much more to this text, but these are the qualities I love most. If you want to prevent patient's problems or at least identify them early, this text is a must and it will make you look like a genius in the process! I won't leave home without it.

New to the Third Edition:
Good Quick review for CP calls
Nice quick review. With excellent tables. Good value.
ON CALL LABORATORY MEDICINE AND PATHOLOGY is a handy pocket reference for pathologists on call to help with common questions and problems in laboratory medicine and pathology. The first section deals with general issues that are critical to formulating appropriate responses to questions, including communicating with colleagues, identifying problems, and the strengths and limitations of laboratory measurements. The section on Clinical Pathology covers the various "on-call" situations and responses encountered in transfusion medicine. It also provides an approach to calls in Anatomic Pathology. The entire book and appendices are replete with useful tables and charts presenting frequently needed facts in a user-friendly fashion. The material discussed has been chosen based on the author1s experience with "on-call" situations over the years. Specific problems encountered during interactions with resident and attending pathologists are discussed, and an attempt has been made to stay away from the traditional textbook format.
Laboratory Math
This book is an excellent reference book for Laboratory Mathmatics. It provides the formulas needed and easy-to-understand explainations. I would recommend it for a beginning student or a student like myself who is taking continuing education.
Not...quite what you might think.
I have complained for years about a lack of a mathematics for chemists book. This looked like just what I was looking for. I first saw it advertised by a chemical company. When I got it, however, I found it to be either too shallow, or too specific. It spent a great deal of time discussing things like accuracy versus precision and the like. Then suddenly it switches to calculating concentrations of urea. Instead of being an overall guide to the mathematics of a laboratory, it was instead a guide to calculating values as a professor in an undergraduate biological analysis lab. Really not how it presents itself. That said, it's okay for what it is. But rather than attempt to use labs as specific examples of fundamental concepts and use those for widely varying applications, it instead explains the math found in a few typical experiments, and that's all.
EXCELLENT BOOK CONDITION
The book I got was in excellent condition. I really trust Amazon, because it never let me down. The books I bought was cheap as well as it looked new. This book is essential book for all medical maths and I really appreciate your job of making it available to everyone in lower price.
Thank you very much

A decent lab manual for Biochemistry
I used this book as a lab manual for my Biochemistry class in college. The book itself is well organized in most respects. However, there are some parts that were well explained in the manual when it came to trying to answer the problems at the end of each experiment. Some of the examples given in the pre-lab didn't apply to the questions being asked so it would lead our class to having to nag the professor for some answers on how to solve the problem. Overall though the techniques employed are relative and effective when it comes to the biochemistry field.
book was ok, but i have everything you need
This book doesnt explain things 100% but I do. I am selling the old lab reports that I have, past exams and the powepoints. Everything is guarenteed to give you an A. I am selling it with the lab book for $50. Check it out
i sold this book after i graduated college
now i'm in a field where i wish dearly that I still had it. it's pretty general, and that's why i like it.
Ninfa/Ballou/Parsons is a solid biochemistry lab manual, dedicated to developing research skills in students, allowing them to learn techniques and develop the organizational approaches necessary to conduct laboratory research.
Ninfa/Ballou/Parsons focuses on basic biochemistry laboratory techniques with a few molecular biology exercises, a reflection of most courses which concentrate on traditional biochemistry experiments and techniques. The manual also includes an introduction to ethics in the laboratory, uncommon in similar manuals. Most importantly, perhaps, is the authors' three-pronged approach to encouraging students to think like a research scientist: first, the authors introduce the scientific method and the hypothesis as a framework for developing conclusive experiments; second, the manual's experiments are designed to become increasingly complex in order to teach more advanced techniques and analysis; finally, gradually, the students are required to devise their own protocols. In this way, students and instructors are able to break away from a "cookbook" approach and to think and investigate for themselves.
Suitable for lower-level and upper-level courses; Ninfa spans these courses and can also be used for some first-year graduate work.
It's a friggin' Textbook
At least it's small enough to fit in a backback already crammed full of other books.
